Pushcar Camel Fair

This is a story about an event that occurs in the dessert in Northern India every year. It is called the Pushcar Camel Fair – this is where all of the tribesmen bring their camels to trade or sell for the year. As you can imagine, there are camels everywhere in this very dusty dessert being tended to by camel boys. Many of them are dressed up in brightly colored harnesses and paint. The tribesmen have created a home out of a tent and a fire. In the early morning and night they hover around the fire as their camels are tethered to the dirt floor with rope.

This is also a fair – yes,complete with vendors selling all sorts of wears – like camel harnesses. There are rides – the most famous faris wheel is there as well as other simple roller coasters and kiddie rides. You can eat the food if you are really brave, but I choose not to on this day.

The other significant event occuring during this fair is the pilgrimage that the gurus make to the lake that is nearby. They come to this lake every year because it is told that some of Gandhi’s ashes have been placed here. So you have several gurus dressed in a simple cloth walking around the fair as they make their way to the lake.

This fair occurs every fall in Northern India and is one of the oldest. It is truly a sight to behold.

There are several different types of silk scarves. There are square silk scarves, long silk scarves, silk scarves that are large enough to act as wraps. There are also different thicknesses of scarves; some are light silk, others are heavy silk scarves. These heavy silk scarves typically have a more complex design that involves several colors of silk thread. Because of the complexity of the design and the multiple colors involved and the size of the scarf, these scarves tend to cost more. They are beautiful works of art, worthy of wearing with an evening gown or cocktail dress. They also will keep you warm on these somewhat cool spring nights.

Who Are The Weavers

The weavers in India sit on dirt floors with large looms. Some of them work the pattern in the silk using cardboard cards that tell the loom where to put the various colors of threads. Yet, some of the more ancient weavers weave their fabrics using memory. This is a very amazing thing to watch. If you can imagine a loom with hundreds of threads running vertically and the weaver needs to know how to insert the bobbin horizontally to form the pattern. This takes much skill and is said to be passed down from generation to generation. It is a dying art in India where manufacturers are moving toward maching looms so they can produce product faster.

These scarves you see are from Varanasi, India. Varanasi is considered the holiest city to the Hindus. This is where they come to pay pilgrimage to the Ganges River. It is believed that Varanasi is the oldest city on earth – it is the center of the university according to ancient Hindu scripture. Needless to say, the Hindus come here by the millions to bathe in this river which is, in todays standards, beyond polluted. What is most amazing is the people who come to this place to bathe do not get sick from this experience. If fact, they feel uplifted and go home feeling full of joy.
